April 21, 2017 is one remarkably promising event as this was the day for the turn- over ceremony of the Dialysis Machine at Basilan General Hospital (BGH). The Rotary Club Escalon Sunrise California Chapter represented by Mr. Romy C. Damiles– president donated the Dialysis equipment thru Rotary Club Basilan chapter as the primary recipient and turned- over the said machine to Basilan General Hospital as the sub-recipient.  The occasion was graced by key people. In attendance were Dr. Abdulla B. Dumama Jr.- assistant Secretary, Office for Field Implementation Management Cluster Head-Mindanao from the Department of Health; Dr. Rufino G. Gaudiel, Officer-in-Charge- Chief of hospital for BGH; and the provincial governor of Basilan Honorable Jim S. Hataman Salliman. Present during the ceremony were representatives from line agencies such as the Basilan Provincial Health Office, Phil Health, Lamitan District hospital, Sumisip District Hospital, other Government entities and   Non- Government organizations including Rotary Club Zamboanga City Chapter.

In his speech, Dr. Rufino G. Gaudiel narrated the humble beginnings of the hospital. He reiterated its’ advent from Provincial hospital to general hospital catering the needs of the patients to its’ utmost resources.

Thereafter, a very significant message was given by Hon. Jim S. Hataman Salliman. He emphasized his support through social assistance for indigent patients and those financially incapacitated patients with special medical needs to avail such services. He mentioned further, BGH will be given technical support by the Provincial Government of Basilan in their intention of improving and upgrading the said hospital.

Dr. Abdulla B. Dumama Jr. shared his heartfelt gratitude for being part of the event. He pointed out the importance of having the Dialysis Center in the province of Basilan as this will serve as an easy to reach facility and lessen the financial burden of those patients with end-stage renal disease needing dialysis. He discussed basic about the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Kidney Failure and the different diseases that would contribute to ESRD such as Diabetes and Hypertension.After all the messages the turn-over of Dialysis machine to Dr. Gaudiel with the presence of Hon. Governor Jim S. Hataman Salliman

Rev. Fr. Joselito Delos Reyes Parish Priest, Begang,Isabela City blessed the Dialysis Room. The room is located at the BGH assigned Philhealth Building adjacent to the temporary Operating room. The Doctor and Nurse In-Charge of the Dialysis room are Dr. Ernesto Sanson and Jenaida  Esseng respectively. As to the functionality and policies of the dialysis rooms in accepting patient with End Stage Renal Disease are upon the completion of their training on Dialysis skills/management held in Manila. The dialysis service is expected to be fully functional after the end of the skills training.

The significance of the DIALYSIS MACHINE with a well define Kidney disease management Program will lessen the FINANCIAL BURDEN OF PATIENTS  WITH ESRD needing DIALYSIS in Basilan. In addition, the presence of functional dialysis center will also ease emotional burden of the families with family member having ESRD. THE Dialysis Center WILL BE CATERING particularly not only the constituents of Isabela but all 11 municipalities including ESRD patients residing in Lamitan City. The road to sustaining a functional dialysis center might be a great challenge, however with perseverance and hard work all things are possible… a great light of HOPE for the people of Basilan.
