BASILAN SUB-PORT INAUGURATED

Isabela City March 25, 2003-The Bureau of Customs sub-port in Basilan was formally inaugurated yesterday morning. The sub-port's located at the Basilan Provincial Capitol.

Custom's District Collector Marietta Zamoranos, who personally officiated the ceremony, disclosed that her office would give traders a chance to be in the mainstream in trading, as smuggling is rampant in Basilan.

"The people of the Bureau of Customs will educate the traders on how to pay tax to the government," Zamoranos said.

In his message during the inauguration, Basilan Gov. Wahab Akbar said the leaders and people of Basilan want to explore province's resources and do business with the outside world.

Businessmen in Basilan can now apply for export and import business because foreign vessels can now enter the Basilan sub-port.

Basilan has a lot of resources like rubber extract and other agricultural products, which are in demand in the foreign market.

On the other hand, Rep. Gerry Salapuddin said during the inauguration that the formal opening of the sub-port in Basilan is a very welcome development that will bring more economic prosperity to the people.

He revealed that he has sponsored a bill in Congress for the establishment of an economic zone and Freeport in Basilan.
